In Metro Manila, kids skip school to go malling. In some impoverished far-flung communities in the Philippines, kids wake up as early as 3 AM and hike for 4-6 kilometers over treacherous mountainous terrain and crossing rivers and streams just to go to school.

This story is not unique. In fact, this is the 3rd Yellow Dorm of Hope project of Yellow Boat of Hope Foundation. The first two dorms are located in Kabasalan and Buayan, Zamboanga Sibugay. When Angat Buhay Program of Vice President Leni Robredo brought to the attention of Yellow Boat of Hope Foundation Inc. (YBH) the sad plight of school kids in Siayan, Zamboanga del Norte; YBH immediately started the ball rolling.

With funding from Metrobank Foundation, YBH built the dorm in less than two months. 25 boys from Siayan National High School are now occupying the dorm for free. They come from the poorest of families and live at the very least 6 kilometers to as much as 10 kilometers from their school Siayan National High School. Many of would them would eventually drop out because of the difficulties. Hopefully, this dormitory would help improve the school’s drop out and participation rate.

During the turnover last February 15, 2017 graced by no less than Vice President Leni Robredo, Mayor Flora Villarosa, YBH President and co-founder Dr. Anton Mari Lim, School Principal Dexter Fabricante, Regional and local DepED officials; the dormers recounted their heart wrenching stories which inspired everyone to work even harder in making it easier for learners to go and finish their education. Aside from the Dormitory, Complete set of BOSCH power tools were donated to the school’s carpentry workshop, a computer and printer set and a school year supply of BIC ballpen for all the students at Siayan Elementary School.
